We’ve been very critical of Robert Sanchez in his time at Chelsea, and rightly so. He’s cost this team a lot of points, and those points may well cost us the chance to finish in the Champions League places.
But today he’s come up trumps. There were some shaky moments in the first half which weren’t punished, but in the end it was a really positive performance from the keeper, who made two late saves to keep his team’s lead intact.
The second one was particularly impressive, with the Spaniard having to transfer his weight back the other way and throw his hand out to tip away a Dwight McNeil effort. He’s always been a good shot stopper, and this was a perfect example.
“What a save from Robert Sanchez. He is moving the other way and the athleticism to get his hand and turn it around the post. He has made two massive saves today,” Joe Cole said on TNT Sport.

"WHAT A SAVE!" 😳

Robert Sanchez’s big leap means 3 points for Chelsea

Three points secured by Sanchez’s big leap doesn’t guarantee anything, but it puts the pressure on our rivals for a top 5 place. It also lifts the pressure on the players and the manager a little, hopefully helping them to perform better in games to come.
Players like Sanchez and today’s goalscorer Nicolas Jackson have suffered a little with so much pressure on them, and today’s win could really help create some positive feedback. They all soaked up the applause from the home fans at full time, and will want to see more of that.
There could still be a happy ending to this story.
