Match Report: Chelsea beaten 3-1 by better Bayern Munich in Champions League return

Chelsea have been beaten 3-1 by Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena on the Blues’ return to the Champions League.

It was an interesting game, with a first half played at a blistering pace. Chelsea impressed in the first 15 minutes in particular, showing no fear in a hostile stadium against a top team. The Blues were on the front foot and initially had Bayern looking worried.

But mistakes in defence cost Enzo Maresca’s team once again. The first goal was unlucky to an extent – the home team benefitted from some generous refereeing, but Chelsea had switched off and conceded an own goal when Trevoh Chalobah deflected Michael Olise’s wicked cross into his own net.

That was a body blow, and a rattled Blues team soon compounded their error by giving away a stupid penalty when Moises Caicedo was caught the wrong side of Harry Kane and brought him down.

Just when it seemed like they’d given the game away, they got back into it. Cole Palmer was the heart of all of Chelsea’s good attacking play tonight, as usual, and his dash down the pitch and quick exchange with Malo Gusto opened up Bayern, before the attacking midfielder fired a crisp first time finish high into the net.

That gave Maresca’s team some belief, and they started the second half well again. But they soon tired, and before long a horrific defensive error cost them when Malo Gusto’s loose touch fell for Kane in the box.

After that, it really was game over. Chelsea looked tired, and couldn’t even convince themselves they had a chance of getting two goals back. They had their moments, but Bayern were really keeping them at arm’s length for most of the second period.

It’s not the ideal start to the league stage, with Chelsea now playing catch up and some tough fixtures ahead. There are winnable games to come – but the margin for error just became significantly narrower.

Rotating his lineup was always going to be a big challenge for Enzo Maresca this season, and so far it’s not going well. He played a weakened team against Brentford team at the weekend and drew, despite the big guns all coming on in the second half He then put his first XI out tonight but they looked tired, and he waited far too long to make changes.

The introduction of some fresher legs gave Chelsea a chance – but by then the rest of the team were exhausted and there was little belief that the tide could be turned. In the end, the likes of Palmer end up exhausted and injured – and we’ll need them again on Saturday night.
