BBC Sport have reported that Bournemouth have rejected a £64m bid from Chelsea for midfielder Alex Scott. Senior football correspondent Sami Mokbel and football reporter Nizaar Kinsella report that the Cherries made clear to the Blues that any further approaches would not be welcomed, with the club insisting they intend to keep the 22-year-old on the south coast. Complicating matters significantly, Scott has also rejected a new contract that has been on the table for at least two months.
£64m rejected – but Bournemouth’s position may not hold
Bournemouth’s resolve is understandable given their current position. They qualified for the Europa League, they don’t need the cash after selling Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez, Illia Zabarnyi and Dango Outtara last summer, and they have two years left on Scott’s contract to stand behind. On paper, they hold the cards.
But a player who has knocked back a new deal and attracted £64m bids from Chelsea – not to mention earlier interest from Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham and Manchester City – is a player who knows his own market. Frankly, Bournemouth telling interested clubs they won’t sell is one thing; convincing Scott himself to commit long-term is quite another, and right now they are failing on that front.

The fact that Scott has been with Bournemouth’s squad for Marco Rose’s pre-season camp in Austria doesn’t close the door on a move – clubs routinely hold players through pre-season while negotiations continue. What matters is that he has not signed a new contract that has been on the table for at least two months, and that silence is telling.
