Chelsea have landed one of the Premier League’s most complete centre-backs in Maxence Lacroix – and at £52m for a 26-year-old World Cup defender with six years left on his new contract, this is the kind of signing that actually makes sense.

BBC Sport have confirmed that Chelsea have agreed a £52m deal to sign Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, with senior football correspondent Sami Mokbel reporting that personal terms are not expected to be an issue. Lacroix is expected to undergo a medical in the next 24 hours before signing a long-term contract understood to run until 2032. The deal was negotiated at ownership level between the two London clubs.
£52m – and Chelsea are getting exactly what Alonso needs
Palace had been seeking around £60m for Lacroix, so getting this done at £52m represents decent business from our end. The Frenchman, 26, arrived at Selhurst Park from Wolfsburg in August 2024 for an initial £15.5m – with a further £2.6m in potential add-ons – meaning Palace are banking a significant profit on an asset they’ve held for less than two years. Good for them. Better for us that we’ve got him.
The numbers behind Lacroix are genuinely impressive. BBC Sport’s analysis shows he was the only player in the 2025-26 Premier League season to record at least 50 tackles (60), 200 duels won (204), and 250 clearances (252). His one-on-one defensive success rate over the past two seasons – 50.5% among players who faced at least 50 such duels – was the best success rate in one-on-one defensive situations among players to face at least 50 such duels, winning possession 50.5% of the time. For a team that has shipped too many soft goals in recent years, that is exactly the profile we need.
At 6ft 4in with a recorded top speed of 35.81km/h, Lacroix is genuinely rare: a physically dominant centre-back who can also recover. Frankly, that combination is what separates good defenders from elite ones, and it’s been missing from our back line for too long. The contract to 2032 also means we’re not paying a premium for someone in the final years of their peak – we own this player at the right age.
What this means for Alonso’s rebuild – and how Lacroix fits
Xabi Alonso has used both a back four and a back three across his coaching career, and Lacroix is comfortable in either system. He spent two full seasons operating in Glasner’s three-man defence at Palace while also demonstrating he can function in a conventional back four – that versatility gives Alonso real options as the squad rebuild continues to take shape.
The financial context matters too. and spending £52m on a proven Premier League operator with World Cup experience – Lacroix made three appearances for France at the 2026 tournament, including starts against Norway and England – is the right use of it. This isn’t a gamble on potential. It’s a calculated investment in a player who has already proven himself at the highest level.
Palace will move on – Palace want teenage Brest defender Le Guen – and so will we. Lacroix is ours. We’ll take it.
