Chelsea clear two more squad places as Fofana leaves permanently

Chelsea have agreed two more deadline-day exits, with David Datro Fofana completing a permanent move to Servette FC and Caleb Wiley joining Preston on a season-long loan before the summer window shuts at 11pm BST on Tuesday.

Fofana and Wiley confirmed as Chelsea trim the squad

George Flood, Senior Sport Editor at the Evening Standard, reported that Standard Sport understands Fofana has sealed his move to the Swiss side. The permanent deal is worth an initial €2.5m (£2.1m) plus a further €1m (£856,000) in add-ons, Standard Sport reported. Wiley, meanwhile, has joined Preston on a season-long loan, returning to the Championship where he previously spent time on loan at Watford.

Chelsea have been focused on trimming their oversized first-team squad before the window closes for business, and these two moves form part of a hectic week of departures. We’ve covered the wider picture of that squad-reduction push in more detail elsewhere.

Fofana originally joined Chelsea from Molde for £10m in January 2023 but managed only four senior appearances and never scored, last featuring for the club in May 2023. Since then he’s been shipped out on five successive loans – to Union Berlin, Burnley, Goztepe, Fatih Karagumruk and Strasbourg – before this permanent switch to Servette finally drew a line under his Stamford Bridge spell.

Wiley’s story is similarly stalled. He arrived from Atlanta United for £8.5m in the summer of 2024 but has never made a competitive first-team appearance for Chelsea, spending time on loan at Strasbourg before his Watford loan was cut short by injury in January.

On the numbers, Fofana’s fee is confirmed as an initial €2.5m (£2.1m) with a further €1m (£856,000) in potential add-ons – a permanent deal, not a loan. Standard Sport gives no fee for Wiley’s loan and no contract length for either move, so we won’t pretend to know more than that.

These exits sit alongside a genuinely busy week for Chelsea’s outgoings. Liam Delap has gone to Nottingham Forest in a package worth £50m, Nicolas Jackson’s £65m move to Aston Villa has been agreed, and Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile and Mamadou Sarr have all been loaned out to Crystal Palace, Napoli and Real Sociedad respectively. Omari Kellyman has joined Strasbourg permanently too. In other news…

Emiliano Martinez was undergoing a medical ahead of a reported £7.5m move from Aston Villa, while Chelsea were also set to pay £40m for Atalanta teenager Honest Ahanor, who may be sent straight out on loan.

Dario Essugo, Tosin Adarabioyo and Marc Guiu are among those who could still depart before the window shuts, with Mykhailo Mudryk expected to leave on loan. Enzo Fernandez’s situation remains unresolved too, with Manchester City reportedly preparing a late approach – one to watch closely before deadline day is done.
