Robert Sanchez has not had the best start to his Chelsea career, but last night was a big moment.
He saved a penalty from Bournemouth just as the home side were really taking Chelsea apart, and that gave his team a platform. Chelsea were a little shaky, but they got the win and 3 points they never would have had without their goalkeeper.
Speaking to Chelsea TV, he generously praised one of his defender’s actions in helping him secure the clean sheet.
“A brilliant couple of blocks from Levi” he said of his teammate, who helped the Blues recover from some really shaky spells early on to be one of the better performers in the game.
You can see the goalkeeper speaking in the clip embedded here:
It looks like Sanchez is going to be our goalkeeper going forward, so we’re happy to see him building up some form and some confidence. He did give away the penalty which he then saved, but that was far more down to an error from Wesley Fofana in front of him.
If we sort out the defence and the midfield, Sanchez should be much better protected and look less like a weak point of the team as we go into this season. Filip Jorgensen doesn’t look like he’s going to be challenging for a first team spot right away, so instead of hoping Sanchez is dropped, we’ve just got to get behind him and hope he can continue to show good form between the sticks.
West Ham next week will provide a very different attacking threat, but hopefully a return to Stamford Bridge, as well as some players coming back from injury, helps us produce a more solid showing that builds on some of the bright spots we’ve seen already in the opening month of the season.
