Chelsea face anxious wait after worrying Romeo Lavia injury comments from Belgium boss

Belgium coach Domenico Tedesco has provided an update on the fitness of Romeo Lavia after the midfielder missed both of Belgium’s Nations League matches.

Lavia has been plagued by injury issues after swapping Southampton for Chelsea in the summer of 2023 in a deal worth up to £58m.

The 20-year-old played just 32 minutes last season under Mauricio Pochettino, but thankfully he’s featured on a more regular basis so far this campaign.

Lavia was one of Chelsea’s best performers in pre-season and started the opening game against Manchester City, but subsequently missed the next four league games after picking up a hamstring injury as a late substitute against Servette.

Enzo Maresca made the bold decision to restore him to the starting line-up at the expense of Enzo Fernandez for the trip to Liverpool and Lavia has started every league game since alongside Moises Caicedo, who he stated he’s had a good connection with since day one.

Chelsea have been sweating on the fitness of Lavia since he was taken off in the draw against Arsenal, but he still joined up with the Belgium squad.

The midfielder gave an update on his fitness last week before the international games began, and although he was involved in training he didn’t feature in either of Belgium’s Nations League games.

Tedesco has provided an update on the midfielder and said he thought Lavia had a hamstring problem and they didn’t want to risk him.

“I think Romeo Lavia has a hamstring problem,” he told RTL Sports as cited on X.com.

“It was bothering him this morning and we didn’t want to risk him.”

It’s clear that Lavia shouldn’t have been called up by Belgium and should have stayed with Chelsea to rest and recover ahead of a busy schedule after the international break.

The extent of the injury is unclear and there’s a chance Lavia could still feature against Leicester on Sunday, but it’s a situation Chelsea could really do without.
