“It’s something that made me happy” – Lavia shares what ex-Chelsea ace did when he was injured last season

Romeo Lavia has described former Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku as a big brother and revealed what the Napoli star did when he was injured last season.

Lavia joined Chelsea from Southampton in a deal worth up to £58m in the summer of 2023, but his debut campaign at Stamford Bridge was plagued by injury issues.

The 20-year-old was limited to just 32 minutes of action under Mauricio Pochettino, but thankfully this season he’s been able to feature on a more regular basis.

Lavia was one of Chelsea’s top performers in pre-season and he started the first game of the season against Manchester City.

However, he picked up a hamstring injury when he came on as a late substitute against Servette and missed the next four Premier League games.

The Belgian returned to the starting line-up against Liverpool, with Enzo Maresca taking the bold decision to drop Enzo Fernandez, and he’s subsequently started every league game since then.

Lavia and Moises Caicedo are currently Maresca’s preferred midfield pairing and the Belgium international recently admitted he’s had a great connection with the Ecuadorian since day one.

It’s great to see Lavia back playing football and impacting games for Chelsea, although he did suffer an injury scare against Arsenal, which he’s subsequently provided an update on.

The road back from injury won’t have been easy and Lavia revealed what Lukaku did when he was injured last season that meant a lot to him.

“I consider him a big brother. He was able to see this reciprocity a few months ago. Last season, when I had all these physical problems, he often sent me messages to make sure I was okay,” he told RTL Info.

“It’s something that made me happy, that touched me. He’s someone, you can see it in the locker room, he has great leadership and he helps this young generation a lot to feel comfortable.”

Whilst Lukaku is far from popular with Chelsea fans it’s a nice touch and it’s important young players have good support around them, which Lavia clearly does.
