Enzo Maresca left so angry with Chelsea owners that he walked away from £14m

Former Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca was apparently left so angry with the club owners that he walked away from £14m.

The official word was that Chelsea and Maresca had mutually parted company, so it wasn’t an official sacking or Maresca walking away. They both agreed that it was the best thing to do.

This meant that Chelsea didn’t sack their manager, meaning that they did not have to pay him off for his contract or offer any compensation, according to reports.

If Chelsea sacked Maresca, he would have been entitled to £14m compensation apparently. So for Chelsea, it was probably a good thing that the manager seemingly wanted out just as much as they wanted him out, in what was an ugly ending between the two parties in the end.

There’s been a lot of criticism aimed towards the Chelsea owners since this happened, and one pundit from NBC was the latest to criticise them for this saga over the weekend.

Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior looks like he will be next to step up as Chelsea head coach, and yesterday appeared to even say his goodbyes to the French side.

Journalist Martin Lipton has reported that Enzo Maresca felt so angry of how he was being undermined by the hierarchy that he walked away from a potential compensation package worth around £14m. Chelsea have accused him of “emotional immaturity”.

Really messy

It’s ended up being a really ugly and messy situation with both sides briefing a lot to the media and having it all so public.

None of us will ever truly know what happened here because there are always two sides to a story, but both sides of this story have wild versions and it’s just not ended up being a great look at all for the Chelsea owners.

  1. I am a chelsea fun who loves to see the team seriously competing for trophies as it was in the old days before this new management took over under circumstances I feel were politically not true. I pitty my fellow chelsea funs because the new management project strategy is recruit promising players, give them playing time so that prospective buyers can evaluate the money worth and sell to them but the strategy is not competing for trophies per se. The new owners want to maintain the funs because there is gate money, which top up players’ sales!!!!!

  2. Enzo Maresca deserved to be given time at Chelsea, but it all ended up in an unfair treatment and disgraceful saga!
Chelsea will sit in mid-table this season at very best, to say the least!

  3. In my opinion, the key diffrence is that Maresca is a football person, whareas the board think only of value/income.
