Danny Welbeck’s Two-Year Chelsea Deal Edges Closer After Brighton Clearance

BBC Sport‘s Nizaar Kinsella has reported that Chelsea are finalising a move for the 35-year-old Brighton striker after being granted permission to put him through a medical at Stamford Bridge. Welbeck is then expected to link up with the squad in Hong Kong next week for pre-season.

The deal is part of Xabi Alonso’s deliberate push to add age and experience to a squad that has been the youngest in the Premier League for two consecutive seasons. Frankly, that youth-heavy imbalance has been a visible problem – we’ve watched talented but inconsistent players drift through big moments without the steadying presence that experienced professionals bring.

Behdad Eghbali acknowledged as much towards the end of last season, saying the recruitment model needed a “tweak” after we finished tenth and won nothing. The Welbeck pursuit, alongside the broader squad overhaul Alonso has been driving since taking charge, suggests that tweak is now very much underway.

Chelsea have also made an offer for Granit Xhaka – reuniting him with Alonso from their Bundesliga-winning season at Leverkusen – while talks over Jordan Henderson continue. Maxence Lacroix has already been signed from Crystal Palace on a six-year deal, pending announcement, and Morgan Rogers arrived for a club-record £117m earlier this month.

Welbeck joined Brighton on a free transfer from Watford in 2021 and became their leading Premier League scorer. He has 90 top-flight goals across 400 appearances – numbers that carry genuine weight, whatever his age. Formerly of Manchester United and Arsenal, he brings experience of high-pressure environments that most of our current forward line simply doesn’t have yet.

His arrival does create a crowded picture up front. According to Kinsella’s report, Chelsea are looking to build around Joao Pedro and Welbeck, with Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, and Marc Guiu all candidates to leave on loan or permanently. Emmanuel Emegha, in from sister club Strasbourg, could still remain as part of the squad. Six senior strikers is too many – movement is coming.

Chelsea have been moving quickly through their medical and permission protocols this window, and this one appears no different. Once the medical clears, Welbeck heads to Hong Kong and the paperwork gets signed. Two years, a proven Premier League striker, and a dressing room that gets a little more grown-up. We’ll take it.
